Our instrument instruction emphasizes improvisation and experimentation. Skilled instructors are equipped to work with students of all skill levels. We begin with the basics and build from there, enabling students to confidently compose and perform songs with their band. With small class sizes and an average instructor-to-student ratio of 2:5, each student receives personalized attention and support.
On the first day of camp, campers form bands with their peers and begin the exciting journey of writing original songs in the style and genre of their choosing. This collaborative experience helps them develop their unique voices while honing their teamwork skills. During band practice, we focus on song structure, melody, and rhythm. Each band is guided by a dedicated Band Coach who provides support and direction throughout the process. The week culminates in a Showcase on Saturday, where bands perform their songs for an audience of friends, family, volunteers, and TRC fans!
Students attend a range of interactive arts, cultural and social/emotional learning workshops, including DIY Music Technology, Screen Printing, Musical History of Resistance, & Media Literacy. Daily lunchtime performances by local musicians, followed by a Q&A session, provide students with inspiration and insights into the creative process.

Our 2025 Summer Program will be held in June; Sign up for the newsletter to be updated or check our website in the Spring.
On the first day of camp we have an activity similar to musical chairs. When the music stops students ask each other questions about music, ideas, and interests. Students write a list of their preferred bandmates, which is then used alongside factors like instrumentation, musical goals, and age to form the bands.
Campers are placed in groups based on their comfort level. During the first day of instrument instruction, instructors observe student’s comfort playing the instrument and their technique. Instrument instruction is mix of skill levels but there are at least 2 instructors for every 5 students so that classes can split up into groups for a portion of the class.
